Magnolia Bakery – New York for “cupcake”

Magnolia Bakery is without question New York’s most famous cupcake bakery due to it’s cameo appearance in Sex In The City. This quaint little cookchop on Bleeker St (and other New York locations) will often have a line wrapping out the door and around the corner as tourists and cupcake fanatics queue up to buy the extravagantly priced delicacies. At $3 a pop, you can get any one of these small fluffy cakes, piled with a mound of sweet, buttery icing. In fact, it’s that mound of sweet buttery icing that really differentiates Magnolia from its competitors. While Billy’s Bakery makes the cupcakes closest in similarities, their icing is slightly heavier, richer in both butter and sugar. Magnolia’s seems to be slightly lighter – more fluffy, whilst still being rich and Moorish. Other cupcakes, such as Crumbs or Amy’s Bread compete in a completely different division and simply don’t compare to the highly perfected recipes or Magnolia or Billy’s Bakery.

If you are a first timer to Magnolia’s then I highly recommend going the plain and simple, vanilla cupcake. It’s my go-to cake of choice and while other combinations (such as red velvet, chocolate with vanilla icing, vanilla with chocolate icing, etc etc) can be tempting, there’s nothing quite as elegant as the original!

The red velvet cupcake's icing was like marshmellowy, creamy goodness!

The end.

Magnolia Bakery doesn’t just make cupcakes, though. They do a mean breakfast muffin shock full of fruit, along with other cakes, biscuits and slices.

So tell me Dear Reader, are you the type that likes the classic, simple, vanilla cupcake or are you the type that goes for the Cupcake War’s variety – i’m talking chocolate ganache with a caramel pistachio center with ganache icing and salted caramel drizzled on top of that and on top of that more pistachio and why not some crystallized orange and then a lindt ball, etc, etc, etc…?
